December 2, 2024

La Consolacion University Philippines (LCUP) hosted an AI Conference on December 2, 2024, at the Kalinangan Auditorium, gathering members of the Association of Schools of the Augustinian Sisters (ASAS). Representatives from various Augustinian schools, both in-person and online, attended the event to discuss the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education.

The conference began with an opening prayer by Sister Regina Cesar, OSA, followed by a welcome address from LCUP President Sister Niceta M. Vargas, OSA. "AI is here to stay, and we must learn to be friends with it," she said. The event was also graced by Sister Eden Gicana, OSA, Superior General of the Augustinian Sisters of Our Lady of Consolacion.

Dr. Mark Rey C. Santos, LCUP Vice President, opened the first plenary session, exploring the history and implications of AI in education. "We must not just adopt AI, but adapt to it," he said, highlighting both the benefits and challenges of AI in the classroom.

Ms. Joseline Santos, Policy Development Head at Bulacan State University, led the second session on evaluating AI tools using the AI-Assessment Scale framework, emphasizing their alignment with educational goals. "AI is here to stay, so we must learn to use it effectively," she stated.

Dr. Jay Mark Santos, Director of Academic Quality Assurance, presented LCUP’s AI policy in the third plenary session, emphasizing the integration of Augustinian values. He quoted Rev. Fr. Daniel Gonzales, SDB: "To humanize AI means we have more time to become more human." Dr. Paul Mora, Dean of the College of Business, further discussed how the policy prepares educators for the digital age.

During the Q&A, Dr. Jay Mark Santos addressed the appropriate age for introducing AI, citing LCUP’s policy, which starts in Grade 4, with strict teacher supervision to ensure students’ core skills are not compromised.

The afternoon session allowed participants to draft and present their own AI policies, fostering collaboration among schools.

The conference concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Divina Ann M. Eusebio, LCUP Vice President for Academic Affairs, encouraging attendees to embrace AI’s potential in enhancing education.

La Consolacion College (LCC) from Caloocan, Pasig, Biñan, Tanauan, Valenzuela, Daet, La Consolacion School of Balagtas, Colegio del Buen Consejo- Pasig, Assumpta Academy Incorporated in Bulakan, and LCUP joined the conference face-to-face, while LCC-Murcia, LCC- Novaliches, Ba-aw, LCC and LCC-Iriga attended via online platform.
