The Office of the Vice President for Research, Publications, and International Affairs (OVPRPIA) in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President for Graduate Studies (OVPGS) provided a Research Competency Enhancement Seminar to the graduate students with the theme “On the Publication Process: Knowledge Production in the Academic Landscape,” on May 27, 2023 at the Kalinangan Auditorium, LCUP Main Campus.

The seminar featured a talk on Research and Publication: Towards a Culture of Research, tackled by the Guest Speaker, Dr. Roland Theuas Pada, Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts and Letters as well as a Researcher at the Research Center for Culture, Arts, and Humanities - University of Santo Tomas – Manila. In Dr. Pada’s discussion, certain points were highlighted such as the personal motives for research, practices in nurturing a culture of research in an institution, and things to consider before submitting a paper to a journal. He also shared the screening process in Kritike – an open- access journal of the UST Department of Philosophy where he is currently affiliated with as one of the editors.

An open forum was facilitated after Dr. Pada’s talk to give way to questions from the audience especially from students who are yet to experience publishing a paper.

Part of the activity is the discussion of the Culture of Research in the LCUP Graduate Studies by Dr. Mark Rey Santos, VP for RPIA. The VP mentioned the need for at least one published research in a refereed journal for students under Master’s Programs and published research in an internationally/nationally- indexed journal for students under Doctorate Programs under the Commission on Higher Education Memorandum Order 15 series of 2019 – which provided the reason for the featured topic during the seminar.

A Round Table Discussion involving five graduate school student participants was facilitated afterwards by Dr. Santos and Ms. Mariefe Cruz, LCUP Research Officer and Program Host. Participants were able to share their experiences in research and publishing a paper, as well as tips and pieces of advice for students who wish to present and publish their papers.
